DAUPHIN COUNTY, Pa. (WHP) — At least three people are dead after a charter bus crash in Pennsylvania Sunday night.
According to Pennsylvania State Police (PSP), the incident happened around 11:49 p.m. on I-81 in Dauphin County.
PSP reported a 2005 Van Hool tour bus was traveling from New York during a heavy downpour when the crash happened.
While traveling, officials said the bus attempted to wind around a right curve when it noticed a 2016 Honda CRV stopped in southbound traffic.
Officers report the bus then exited the roadway, hitting an embankment, turning onto its right side.
The right roof of the bus then smashed into the rear end of the stopped CRV, causing the CRV to slide to the right shoulder on the interstate.
The crash resulted in the charter bus, carrying 45 to 50 passengers, flipping over on its side until it slid up against a beam on the highway.
Hershey Medical Center confirmed that 28 people were admitted to their hospital.
According to staff, two people were admitted as inpatients, 16 were being treated in their Emergency Department, and 10 others were already discharged.
In a statement from UPMC Community Osteopathic, 21 other people were sent to their hospital for injuries, bringing the total confirmed number of injured people to 49.
UPMC reports that 19 of those 21 people have already been treated and released, while the other two remain at the hospital for further treatment.
Crews stated Chambers Hill Fire Department opened up for the reunification of passengers. The Red Cross was also assisting.
The identities of the deceased will be released at a later time once all next of kin have been notified.
